Earlier this week I wrote about the characteristics that can typically be found in a Kenny Atkinson coached team. To summarize, they like to play fast and limit opponent three-point attempts.
To learn about the characteristics of others coaches, I created a simple web application that paid subscribers to The F5 can use to browse the season-level rankings for every active head coach.
Want to know how well teams coached by Jason Kidd protect the ball? You can look that up. Want to know if Quin Snyder’s teams prioritize crashing the offensive boards? You can look that up too. Want to know where Doc Rivers’ teams rank in terms of getting to the free throw line. Yep, you can look that up.
The unique thing about this data is that it uses the exact start and end dates for every coach’s tenure with a given team. So if a coach was hired/fired midseason, it only shows the rankings from a coach’s first game to their last game and not the entire season.
If you’re interested in viewing the app, consider a subscription to The F5 which will give you access to everything The F5 publishes, including tutorials on how to create the visualizations found in this newsletter.
