Good point, but only to a limited extent…2 problems. … firstly, the correlation is not automatically causal. Perhaps people take the three BECAUSE they are open. If Luka drives towards the rim, one option is dishing to a big like Kleber for the three. If the big is open, the chance increases. If the opponent rim protector is guarding him, there is way less chance of him being passed the ball, the pass being successful or taking the shot if he is. Also, that missing defender increases the chance that Luka goes all the way to the basket, pulls up or passes to a cutter at the rim. secondly, Away from the rim is not the same as 3 point line. Dirk is a classic stretch big (stretch 4) but while he did shoot threes he also shot a lot of mid range jumpers. Marc Gasol may be contested only a tiny amount of time at three but he draws a huge amount of attention at the top of the key. In the high post he leaves space for a power forward cutting to the basket.
