Looks to me like the best outside shooters are getting fouled farther from the basket. I would think that may be because they take more shots from farther out. How would a graph of their shot selection look along side the foul chart?
Agreed. Without looking at the data, I'd guess the correlation is even more pronounced if you look at rates of unassisted shot attempts (pull ups and step backs) rather than just shot distribution.
The eye test confirms that Steph Curry was a lot more aggressive about hunting fouls with unnatural shooting motions last season compared to earlier in his career. In the past he was more reluctant to do it but the league has rewarded these types of flops and kicks so often that I imagine he felt like he had to.
I'm skeptical this change will really impact Young and Harden, but it might be enough to discourage some of the guys for whom drawing fouls is less integral to their game. Feels like those two in particular are sneaky enough to get away with foul hunting often enough to keep doing it.
